As the next cold front sets up to slam across the southern plains, it’s not to say that the computer weather models we depend on are failing us, it is just that they aren’t exactly giving us a high-degree of confidence.
Right now, of the dozen or so models that are available to see three to five days into the future, most them have a different idea as to how the airmasses will settle.
I’ll try to get a write up posted as soon as the models come to a consensus…
Seeing as a healthy section of Texas is under the gun for some winter weather, it seemed like a good time to put things into perspective.
The forecast might be calling for between 3″ to 5″ of snow in some places and up to 1/2″ of ice in others, but at least it isn’t this:

Good morning everyone, my deepest apologies for the lack of weather info on the site lately. After a short long vacation, I’m back in the saddle, though.
And as we move through the next few days things are going to get very interesting across the southern plains. The current computer weather models are all over the road, but in the next 24-48 hours they should start to get a better handle on the next system and the drastic cooldown that is moving toward the area.
I’ll have a full breakdown posted by later today. I’d like to wait until the 12z model runs are available as the last two runs have been rather erratic.
This morning it was looking like today would be a few degrees warmer than yesterday’s forecast. Keep in mind that yesterday’s “actual” was about three to seven degrees warmer than the forecast.
So today, I forecast for about three degrees above the morning model runs projections. I went with 96 in Amarillo. And now, it looks like the NAM is pegging 97-ish degrees for Amarillo later this afternoon.
That’ll be within five degrees of the record for today. Not bad.
