Since Amarillo is facing an opportunity for such a fierce winter storm, I went back and looked at the history books for February 24th, 25th and 26th.

And it is wet!

How does 7.8″, 10.0″ and 3.5″ sound? Those are the daily snowfall records, in order, of the dates above.

Now, as it sits right now, our next system will be in Amarillo Sunday afternoon (24th) and leave by Monday (25th) so I don’t think there is a chance to break a record. But it is still interesting that the 24th and 25th are historically wet days and here we are repeating history!

Kinda neat!

The 'Winter Storm Watch' for the panhandles might not be enough

The ‘Winter Storm Watch’ for the panhandles might not be enough

Nick Lilja Saturday, February 23, 2013 // 7:30 pm

For those of you who like the snow, you’re going to love this forecast. For those of you who aren’t fans… Buckle up. Scenario The next system is headed our direction and as it gets closer and closer it is looking increasingly more moist. And with the cold air in place, plus the chance for more cold air to be… Read more →

More snow in Amarillo? That groundhog don't know nothin'

More snow in Amarillo? That groundhog don’t know nothin’

Nick Lilja Saturday, February 23, 2013 // 5:00 am

As a meteorologist, one of the most interesting things to wake up to is the National Weather Service alarm on my phone. It tells me that a new watch/warning/advisory has been issued for our area. On days where we are expecting inclement weather, it isn’t “surprising” to me. This morning, it was. “NWS Issues Winter Storm Watch” Say what? When… Read more →

Colder air seeps in, turns forecast whiter

Colder air seeps in, turns forecast whiter

Nick Lilja Tuesday, February 19, 2013 // 5:00 am

In the past 24 hours things have gotten whiter. A lot whiter. At this time yesterday, we were looking at the chance for some rain showers and a rumble of thunder or two. The GFS, EMCWF and our RPM computer weather models all suggested – roughly – the same thing. Only the NAM computer weather model suggested the infiltration of “cooler” air… Read more →

Friday looking like "Snowday" in Green Bay

Friday looking like “Snowday” in Green Bay

Nick Lilja Monday, February 18, 2013 // 5:00 am

But enough with the rhyming, right? Almost reminds you of that scene in “Happy Gilmore” when Christopher McDonalds character warns Adam Sandler to “Just stay out of my way… or you’ll pay! LISTEN to what I say!” Any.. way. The end of the week in Green Bay is looking whiter and whiter. A closed Low in the Rockies is looking… Read more →
