Tropical Storm Humberto continues gaining strength (...with notes and fun facts)

Tropical Storm Humberto continues gaining strength (…with notes and fun facts)

Nick Lilja Tuesday, September 10, 2013 // 7:19 pm

Well, not really. But it’s not like The Weather Channel has anything else to talk about, right? And frankly, neither do we. For the most part the Lower 48 is quite docile weatherwise. There is the risk of strong storms in the Northeast. It’s still hot across the Midwest. And temperatures are rising across the Pacific Northwest. But, not much… Read more →

Tropical Storm Humberto might be first hurricane

Nick Lilja Monday, September 9, 2013 // 3:54 am

This morning the National Hurricane Center upgraded the tropical depression off the coast of Africa to Tropical Storm Humberto. Currently Humberto is moving west at 12mph with winds at 40mph. The latest projections from the NHC have Humberto forming as the first hurricane in the next 48 hours. In fact, current projections point to the 2am advisory on Wednesday, September… Read more →

May 31, El Reno tornado breakdown

Nick Lilja Friday, September 6, 2013 // 7:17 am

Fantastic breakdown of the El Reno tornado. I’m not sure how long this took to put together but MAJOR respect to Skip Talbot for taking the time to offer his perspective. I was on this storm, too. Pulled from the above video, here is a look at my position relative to the tornadoes position. As you can see, I was… Read more →

September Drought Index released

Nick Lilja Thursday, September 5, 2013 // 7:15 am

The latest drought numbers are showing a positive trend across most of the United States. While the we aren’t drought-free, we are moving in the right direction. In Texas, things are also moving in the right direction. That sad, NOAA still calls for persistence of drought conditions across most of the affected areas – including Texas – during the next… Read more →

This morning it was looking like today would be a few degrees warmer than yesterday’s forecast. Keep in mind that yesterday’s “actual” was about three to seven degrees warmer than the forecast.

So today, I forecast for about three degrees above the morning model runs projections. I went with 96 in Amarillo. And now, it looks like the NAM is pegging 97-ish degrees for Amarillo later this afternoon.

That’ll be within five degrees of the record for today. Not bad.
