UPDATE:The Houston Rockets have named Kevin McHale as the team’s new head coach. McHale will receive a 3-year contract with a team option for a fourth season. Terms of the contract have yet to be disclosed.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:
Houston has offered Kevin McHale coaching job and are in advanced talks on a deal, sources tell Y! Agreement may not come til after weekend. There’s no guarantee terms will be agreed upon with McHale, but sources believe both sides are determined to make it happen.
McHale’s interest in the Rockets vacancy was surprising. In the past he has been reluctant to take a coaching job due to the intense travelling schedule an NBA season entails.
McHale was previously an executive for the Minnesota Timberwolves and briefly served as the team’s head coach. He coached the Timberwolves to a 19-12 record during the 2004-2005 season after replacing Flip Saunders. McHale also coached the Timberwolves during the 2008-2009 season when the team went 20-43 under his direction.
McHale will replace Rick Adelman, who was relieved of his duties after the Rockets failed to make the postseason for the second consecutive season.
Adelman won the only playoff series win for the Rockets in the past 17 years and helped coach the team to a franchise record 22-game winning streak.
The 64-year-old Adelman went 193-135 in four seasons with the Rockets. His career record is 945-616 and ranks eighth in career victories.
