After eight seasons with the Nittany Lions, men;s basketball Head Coach Ed DeChellis is leaving.
“The United States Naval Academy and its mission of building leaders to serve our country and a higher calling really spoke to me,” Chellis said. “Being part of that felt like something I needed to do at this point in my career.”
DeCehllis has been involved in coaching since 1984.
“On behalf of the Penn State and State College communities,” Athletic Director Tim Curley said in a statement. “I would like to offer my sincere appreciation to Ed DeChellis and his staff for their efforts with the men’s basketball program the past eight years.”
It was an unexpected move. DeChellis had been the coach since 2003. He left the job to take the same position at Navy.
Curley began working the phones a day after DeChellis announced his surprise resignation. And while he didn’t name names, he did say that he will “quickly begin a national search for new leadership for the Nittany Lion Basketball program” searching for the best possible candidate.
Curley told the Associated Press that DeChellis left the program with a good foundation after eight years.
“I am extremely proud of the program that we have been able to build here at Penn State and the fine young men who have played for us and graduated from the University,” DeChellis said.
Penn State went just 114-138 under DeChellis, and made the NCAA tournament this past season.
