Celtics sign coach Doc Rivers to 5-year extension

The Boston Celtics have agreed to a new 5-year $35 million contract extension with head coach Doc Rivers.

Greg Dickerson of Comcast SportsNet New England was the first to report that General Manager Danny Ainge and Rivers had agreed to a new deal.

There had been speculation that Rivers would step down as the Celtics head coach at the end of the season. Rivers son Austin was recently named a McDonald’s High School All-American and is set to attend Duke University in the Fall.

Following his team’s disappointing Game 5 loss to the Miami Heat, Rivers informed the media that he will probably be back to coach the Celtics during the 2011-2012 season.

“I’m leaning heavily towards coming back,” Rivers said Wednesday night during his press conference. “I haven’t made that decision. But I can tell you that I probably will. I’ve kind of come to that over the last couple of weeks. I’m a Celtic and I love our guys.

“I want to win again here. I do,” added Rivers. “And I’m competitive as hell. I have a competitive group, and so we’ll see. But I can tell you that’s where I’m at today. Tomorrow, I may change my mind, but that’s where I’m at today. I don’t believe this team is done.”

Not only did Rivers not change his mind, but he gave the Celtics organization a commitment that he is there to stay for the long-term.
