Rapid reaction: Celtics eliminated by Heat

John Locke, the enigmatic chosen one of tv’s Lost used to often emphatically state: “Don’t tell me what I can’t do!”

In Miami tonight, Lebron James made the same statement in the fourth quarter, hitting two key 3-pointers and adding a major steal in the closing minutes of Game 5, as the Heat ousted the battered Celtics from the NBA playoffs.

Of the major talking points of this NBA season, maybe none were more prevalent than the criticism of Lebron James that he could not close games. Tonight he closed the biggest game of his life, and quieted his critics, at least for a few days.

Lebron had 33 and Dwayne Wade had 34 in a game that saw the Celtics lead most of the contest. The Heat controlled the final minutes, however, and the Celtics made mental error after mental error down the stretch making it that much easier for the Heat to claim the series.

Ray Allen led The Celtics with 18 points, with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce adding 15 and 12 points respectively. KG, however, scored 12 of those in the first quarter and never got going afterwards.

In the second and third quarter, Dwayne Wade and Ray Allen led the charge for their respective teams before a dramatic fourth hilighted by two of the best defenses in the league bottling each other up, and Lebron James’ heroics.

The Heat will now go on the the Eastern Conference Finals where they will face either the Chicago Bulls or Atlanta Hawks for a shot at the NBA title.
