Maryland names Mark Turgeon new head coach

The University of Maryland has named former Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon as their new head basketball coach.

A news conference to introduce Turgeon is set for Wednesday at noon in College Park.

“We’re thrilled to bring Mark to the University, where I’m sure he will continue to build on the great legacy and success of Maryland Basketball,” Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said. “In Mark, we have brought one of the outstanding young coaches in the country, and one who has a proven record of achievement on and off the court. We couldn’t be more excited.”

Turgeon coached the Aggies to the NCAA tournament in each of his four seasons at the school. He also coached Wichita State to the Sweet 16.

Turgeon will replace legendary head coach Gary Williams, who retired last Thursday. The 66-year old Williams won 668 games during his coaching career, including 461 at Maryland. He went to 14 NCAA tournaments, won three ACC regular-season titles and had seven Sweet 16 appearances, two Elite Eights and two Final Fours. Williams won the 2002 NCAA National Championship and was the coach of the year in 2002 and the ACC coach of the year in 2002 and 2010.
