Jim Larranaga is headed to Miami

Jim Larranaga is leaving George Mason. He’ll become the next men’s basketball coach at the University of Miami.

George Mason’s athletic director, Tom O’Connor, informed The Associated Press Friday.

Larranaga has a history of success at George Mason. In 2006, he led the Patriots to the Final Four and this past season, after a 27-7 regular season record, led the Patriots back to the NCAA tournament. He posted 13 consecutive winning seasons at GMU.

Larranaga knows streaks. This past season, the Patriots reeled off a school-record 15 straight wins to finish the regular season, remaining undefeated at the Patriot Center.

He was the most-winningest coach in the history of both George Mason and the CAA. He won CAA Coach of the Year twice, in 1999 and in 2011.

O’Conner told the AP that George Mason could not match the salary offered by Miami.

  1. What? Why? Now? This is the dumbest move in the history of Virginia. And we have Dan Snyder, so it’s saying something.
