Only one year into his career at Kansas, freshman Royce Woolridge, will transfer to another school because he wants to play more.
After three years of anticipation, Woolridge – understandably – couldn’t wait to get on the court. But he never seemed to find action this past season in Lawrence. The 6-foot-3 combo-guard only managed nine points in 16 games for the Jayhawks, averaging just 2.8 minutes of playing time.
“I love Kansas, but I just really want to play (more),” Woolridge said in a statement. “I feel like I will have more of an opportunity to play if I went somewhere else. I haven’t chosen a school (at this time).”
Woolridge’s decision comes on the heels of freshman guard Josh Selby declaring for the NBA draft.
Coach Bill Self says he talked to Woolridge after the season about his role with the team.
“When Royce and I met after the season,” Self told reporters. “We talked openly and honestly of the potential role he would have for our team moving forward. After the meeting he wanted to visit with his family. He then came back to me (Thursday) and said he wanted his release and was seeking to transfer.”
Self said in a statement from the school he wishes Woolridge nothing but the best.
