The Boston Red Sox and 1st baseman Adrian Gonzalez have finally agreed to a long-term contract extension.
The 7-year $154 million has long been considered a formality after the Red Sox acquired the slugger from the San Diego Padres back in December. The parameters of the deal were discussed when Gonzalez was initially acquired, but by waiting until after the season started, the Red Sox saved luxury tax money.
According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the breakdown of the deal includes:
2012: $21 million
2013: $21 million
2014: $21 million
2015: $21 million
2016: $21 million
2017: $21.5 million
2018: $21.5 million
* Deal includes a $6 million signing bonus
Gonzalez batted .298 with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs for the Padres last season. He finished fifth in the National League in on-base percentage (.393), ninth in slugging (.511) and led the league in hitting with runners in scoring position (.407).
In 7 seasons with the Padres Gonzalez batted .284 with 168 home runs and 525 RBIs. He has also won 2 gold gloves for his stellar defense.
