ESPN does a lot of things right. A lot. But the four-letter network may have slipped up recently.
The network replaced Jon Miller and Joe Morgan on “Sunday Night Baseball.”
Bobby Valentine and Orel Hershiser along with play-by-play man Dan Shulman will make their debut Sunday for the Giants-Dodgers game.
I’m not saying Shulman can’t be a respectable play-by-play man. Truth is, he will probably do a fine job.
But why mess with success? Miller and Morgan spent 21 seasons as the voices of the franchise.
And they were great!
I know every time ESPN changes something people immediately forget how things were before (a lot like facebook) but I’ve got to think this one will make some waves.
Then again, I recently had a chance to talk with Mike Tirico and he had a different perspective when it came to play-by-play personalities.
“People will never turn off the game because of who the play-by-play guy, or gal, is,” Tirico said.
And I have to believe what the voice of Monday Night Football thinks. He does have some insider information, you know.
ESPN is most likely banking on the hopes that Valentine and Hershiser can revisit a lot of the old conversations they onece had in the dugout.
We’ll see how it turns out.

I gotta disagree….Joe Morgan was terrible, needed to be replaced. I don’t like Jon miller being gone though

Jon Miller being gone is a terrible idea. People are right though, it was time for morgan to go. But after watching the game, Valentine was a new level of terrible as an analyst. He should never be allowed to speak on live television during a baseball game ever again. I know I am not alone in this thought based on some of the comments I have read on other boards, and I gotta say that Mike Tirico is wrong, as much as it pains me to say it, I won’t tune in to another Sunday Night Baseball game as long as Valentine is there, because I dont want to have to watch another game on mute. Just swap out Miller for Valentine and everything will be just fine.

Terrible move by ESPN. Valentine and Hershiser broadcast like everyone has never watched a baseball game before, In that respect they are great for Canadian viewers. Shy man is no better, ESPN had a great team with Miller and Morgan and they screwed it up.
