Nationals trade CF Nyjer Morgan to Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired center fielder Nyjer Morgan from the Washington Nationals for minor league infielder Cutter Dykstra and cash considerations.

Morgan will compete with incumbent Carlos Gomez for Milwaukee’s center field position.

He was had issues with his temper including a benches-clearing incident with the Marlins last September after Florida pitcher Chris Volstad threw behind him. Morgan was suspended eight games and fined $15,000 for his role in the scuffle.

Morgan stole 34 bases for the Nationals last season despite a .319 on-base percentage, and batted .253 with 24 RBIs.

In 2009, Morgan hit .351 in limited playing time with the Nats, and had 24 steals.

Cutter Dykstra, the son of former Mets and Phillies outfielder Lenny Dykstra, was one of Milwaukee’s second-round picks during the 2008 draft. He batted .234 for a pair of affiliates in 2009 and switched from center field to the infield. Dykstra mostly appeared at third base last season at Class A Wisconsin and rebounded at the plate, batting .312 with a .416 on-base percentage in 100 games.
