Michigan State Spartan assistant Mark Montgomery is the new head basketball coach at Northern Illinois, according to the Associated Press.
The Hsukies finished 9-21 this season and only five games since the start of the year.
Montgomery, played college ball as a Spartan (finished third in school history in assists and steals) and then coached four years at Central Michigan before returning to East Lansing.
He’s been there for the last 10 years learning from Tom Izzo and helping the Spartans to three Final Four apperances.
He’ll take over for Ricardo Patton, who had a 35-83 mark over four seasons.
The announcement was made Wednesday night.
