Matchup:
Duke is Duke, they’re on TV more than “Leave it to Beaver” reruns. Hampton is Hampton they’ve played fewer ranked teams than “Leave it to Beaver” reruns. Oh, and Duke just won the ACC tournament. And, no No. 16 seed – in the history of the men’s NCAA Tournament – has eliminated a No. 1 seed. And… Duke is the defending National Champion.
Duke
The Blue Devils are looking past this game but do need to use it to maintain a top-tier level of play. Guard Nolan Smith averages around 21 points, five assists and a steal and will be let loose to run the floor in the first half. Froward Kyle Singler will be able to move easily against the mis-matched defense from the Pirates.
Hampton
The Pirates won the Mi-Eastern Conference Tournament. Guards Darrion Pellum and Kwame Morgan II put up points – about 35 per game – but don’t hit shots with a terrible amount of consistency. Both Pellum and Morgan shoot under 40-percent from the floor. Forward Charles Funches pulls down about seven boards per game – but that won’t work playing in the tall trees of Duke.
