At about 2:20pm, March 8, 2011, Twitter exploded with Tiki Barber un-retirement rumors.
They are true, according to multiple sources.
The former New York Giant has been out of football since 2006. He left the game to become an NFL analyst for television.
In 2006, Barber became only the 21st player in NFL history to rush for over 10,000 yards during his career. He’s also the third player in NFL history to gain more than 10,000 rushing yards and 5,000 receiving yards in a NFL career, joining Marshall Faulk and Marcus Allen.
A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Barber was well known for finishing his career “on top” after walking away from his final season after rushing for 1,662 yards and five touchdowns. He was also known for fumbling the ball early in his career.
Earlier in his career, Barber lost six fumbles in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons – including three lost fumbles in a single game against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 28, 2002. When the Giants hired Tom Coughlin, he changed Barber’s style. Barber changed and started holding the ball vertically instead of horizontally. The following year, in 2004, he only lost two fumbles.
The coming out of retirement talks have stirred an interest in Barber. But amidst all of the CBA talks and the fact that Barber is now 35-years-old, it will be interesting to see where he ends up.
