With National Letter of Intent Signing Day announcements approaching, it may serve us all well to mute our expectations when the national rankings are released. Oregon State recruiting classes are consistently underrated by both national and local media. Luckily for the program, Mike Riley is a hometown guy. He seems to understand that Corvallis isn’t a typical football town, and Oregon State isn’t a typical football school. There are certain types of guys that will succeed here. There are certain types of guys who won’t.
Riley and (assistant coach) Banker seem to expect a level of class and character that resembles the university itself. Much as dogs are said to resemble their owners, the OS(U) football program is beginning to take on the personality of its coach. Humility, Intelligence, Poise and Courage are adjectives that continually define Riley-led teams. Those are winning attributes. The guy just has a knack for being able to coach teams high into the Pac10 standings with recruits widely considered incapable of playing in the conference.
Point is, don’t lose any hair (n.p.i) or sleep after the rankings are out. It’s time to start trusting Riley’s skills.
With that said…
