Phoenix’ Senior Rahmon Fletcher forced overtime on a last-second shot but Green Bay (12-13, 6-7) fell 63-61 at UIC (7-19, 2-12) on a controversial buzzer beater from Robo Kreps.
Robo Kreps hit a driving runner as time expired in overtime. He came off a screen near the top of the key, drove left and converted an up-and-under move for the game-winner.
He finished with 21 points. Paul Carter added 22 points and nine rebounds for the Flames.
UIC had lost 12 of their previous 13 games – including the last match-up with the Phoenix on Jan. 15 when UIC missed all 12 of it’s 3-point attempts. They were 6-for-17 in the rematch Thursday night.
Standout UW-GB freshman Alec Brown had 14 points and Jarvis Williams 13 for Green Bay. Williams had 11 of his 13 points in the second half and added seven rebounds.
UW-GB show 41-percent from the field but were only 3-for-10 at the charity stripe.
On defense the Phoenix stood their ground. Neither team led by more than five points throughout the 45-minute game. UW-GB forced 25 turnovers – eight of which were steals – and 16 defensive rebounds.
The Phoenix forced the overtime period when Fletcher scored a layup off an inbounds play with 1 second remaining, tying the game at 56.
