The Cincinnati Reds have signed 2010 World Series MVP Edgar Renteria to a 1-year deal worth upwards of $3 million plus incentives.
The 35-year old shortstop is coming off of a championship season with the San Francisco Giants. Renteria signed a 2-year $18.5 million deal with San Francisco back in 2008 that included a $9.5 million option for the 2011 season in which the Giants declined.
San Francisco later offered Renteria a deal worth roughly $1 million for the 2011 season but he decided to take the more lucrative offer from Cincinnati.
Renteria helped guide the Giants to their first World Series Championship since moving to San Francisco and is the only player in Major League Baseball history with two separate championship clinching hits (1997 Marlins and 2010 Giants).
He will likely replace Orlando Cabrera at shortstop for Cincinnati. Cabrera is currently a free agent.
