Red Sox, Gonzalez trade falls through

According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, the blockbuster trade that would have sent All Star 1st basement Adrian Gonzalez to the Boston Red Sox has fallen through.

The Red Sox and San Diego Padres agreed to a deal on Saturday morning that would have sen Gonzalez to Boston for prospects Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Reymond Fuentes, and a player to be named later.

Gonzalez was flown to Boston Friday night and both sides worked diligently until the 2pm Sunday deadline on a contract extension. Gonzalez was believed to have wanted a similar contract to the 8-year $180 million deal 1st basemen Mark Teixeira signed with the Yankees two years ago. However the Red Sox were reportedly keen on a deal no longer than 6 years.

Gonzalez is currently in a sleeve after having offseason shoulder surgery and it was believed that the club may have wanted to see how his shoulder responded in Spring Training before making such a commitment.

The Red Sox have long coveted the 28-year-old lefty. Back at the 2009 trading deadline, the Red Sox made a pitch for Gonzalez, a three-time All-Star who last season finished fourth in balloting for the National League’s Most Valuable Player.

Gonzalez batted .298 with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs for the Padres last season. He finished fifth in the National League in on-base percentage (.393), ninth in slugging (.511) and led the league in hitting with runners in scoring position (.407).

In 7 seasons with the Padres Gonzalez batted .284 with 168 home runs and 525 RBIs. He has also won 2 gold gloves for his stellar defense.

With no contract extension in place, the deal has completely fallen through and Gonzalez will remain a member of the San Diego Padres.
