John Loyer joins Detroit Pistons staff

New Jersey Nets assistant coach John Loyer is headed to Detroit to help coach the Pistons according to reporters who spoke with Nets coach Avery Johnson.

“John Loyer is going to Detroit,” Johnson told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. “We’ll have Popeye Jones taking John’s spot. We’ll figure out where we go from there with the rest of the bench.”

Loyer will join new Detroit coach Lawrence Frank. Loyer was Frank’s assistant while Frank was the coach of the Nets. Frank was fired in November 2009.

Loyer has been coaching in an NBA front office since 2000. He spent two seasons as a New Jersey assistant after four seasons in the same position for the Philadelphia 76ers. Before that he was a scout for the Portland Trail Blazers where he helped the Blazers draft players like Zach Randolph and Travis Outlaw.
