The Detroit Lions placed a franchise tag on defensive end Cliff Avril Monday. The move keeps Avril from becoming a free agent.
The team is currently trying to nail down a long-term contract with Avril. In the meantime he will make the average of the five highest-paid players at his position.
Neither side wanted to get involved in franchise tagging, but they were left with no option with the deadline looming.
The 25-year-old Avril has 19 1/2 sacks the past two seasons. He was a third-round in the 2008 NFL draft.
