For the past week in Indianapolis, the NFL crowd is watching as soon-to-be NFL rookies test their skills at the NFL Combine. And Tuesday, in an unrelated story, the NFL did something historic.
The NFL did something it hasn’t done in more than 60 years. It scheduled a Wednesday game. The last one? September 22, 1948, when the – still sort of new to SoCal – Los Angeles Rams trounced the Detroit Lions, 44-7.
The move is for a good reason, though. The League is sidestepping it’s Thursday opener to allow the country to focus on President Barack Obama.
Therefore, the NFL will open the regular season on Sept. 5, and not Sept. 6, to avoid conflicting with Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.
The game will feature the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. The Giants opponent hasn’t been selected yet, but most people expect it to be the Green Bay Packers.
