Turns out that the Tigers can run, too. LSU Tigers junior Charlene Lipsey set the Armory collegiate and meet records for the women’s 1,000 meters at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday.
She finished the 1K race in 2 minutes, 44.34 seconds. Beating out BYU standout – and All-American – Katie Palmer (2:44.78) to the finish line.
“The more I run, the more confidence I get. These races have been a huge confidence boost for me since I am finally winning,” Lipsey told lsusports.net. “Since I’ve gotten here, my indoor season has usually been horrible, but I always pick it up outdoors. With me having such a good start indoor, it gives me so much confidence for the rest of the season. I’m happy with the way it’s turning out right now.”
Lipsey attended Hempstead High School on Long Island and is quite familiar with the Armory. Friday her time broke the Armory collegiate mark of 2:44.39, set by Sheila Reid of Villanova in 2010, and the meet record of 2:45.73, formerly held by a different BYU runner, Sarah Edwards, set in 2011.
That wasn’t the only positive for LSU. Fellow Tigers junior Damar Forbes added a victory in the men’s championship long jump with a seasonal best. Meanwhile in the 400-meter, senior Rebecca Alexander and junior Caleb Williams took Friday’s qualifiers by storm. Each tallied the fastest times of the afternoon.
Williams won his heat at 47.14 and will have the No. 1 seed in Saturday’s race.
