Nearly six hours. That’s how long it took Novak Djokovic to beat Rafael Nadal in the longest Grand Slam singles final in the history of professional tennis. Djokovic won 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5.
It wasn’t until 1:37am local time, Djokovic could call himself the champ. The official timer on the match read: 5 hours, 53 minutes.
“We made history tonight and unfortunately there couldn’t be two winners,” Djokovic said after the match.
This is Djokovic’s third Australian Open title. He is the fifth man to win three-consecutive Grand Slam finals.
