No. 5 Kansas Jayhawks don’t Impress Bill Self, yet

Getting out to a 17-3 start doesn’t impress Kansas basketball coach Bill Self. Getting out to a 17-3 start a season after losing a few key big-name players to the NBA still doesn’t impress Bill Self.

What will impress Bill Self is the No. 5 Kansas Jayhawks slew of opponents the next few weeks.

“Statistically, those are the four teams that are the best in the league,” Self told reporters. “As a matter of fact, I think they are the only four teams in the league with winning records, if I’m not mistaken. Besides us. So yes, without question, this is the toughest part of the season.”

Keep in mind Kansas has won 10-consecutive games since losing to Davidson on December 19. That includes wins over those same teams he included in the “toughest part of the season.”

During the last month, Kansas has beaten No.4 Baylor, No. 22 Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas. The team has steamrolled through the first seven conference games, including a near-40-point margin of victory against Texas Tech.

Then again, four of the Jayhawks next six games are on the road – including games at No. 2 Missouri, Baylor and Kansas State.

Perhaps if the Jayhawks can continue to roll, Self will be impressed by his own team’s performance.
