Don’t look now but September Baseball is about to be less exciting. Commissioner Bud Selig expects baseball to expand the playoffs this season.
To the baseball purist, it’s a sham. To the baseball fan, it’s overdue.
To baseball, it’s already a done deal. Sort of.
Recall that players and owners agreed to add an additional wild-card team in each league during negotiations for the latest MLB CBA. But the sides are still deciding if they want to start it this season or in 2013.
“I really believe we’ll have the wild card for 2012, this year,” Selig said Friday night at a White Sox rally. “Clubs really want it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an issue that the clubs want more than to have the extra wild card this year.”
Right now, scheduling issues are the only thing holding back the new 10-team format.
