“I was on a recruiting trip, going to a home visit with a great young man who will be a phenomenal player here at Texas A&M.”
That’s when Mike Sherman found out he was no longer the head football coach at Texas A&M. Sherman was “almost in the driveway” when he got a call from the Athletic Director, Bill Byrne, informing him of his termination.
That was after the school had released a statement. He was the last to know. His team was already informed. The fans already found out. His family already knew.
Sherman led his team to a 6-6 record this season, leaves Texas A&M with a 25-25 record with no bowl victories.
“I can’t tell you how honored I am to have coached at this university,” Sherman said. “It’s very special.”
He also leaves the team with some unhappy players. Some players took to Twitter to vent their frustrations.
“What I’m reading better be fake. Not kidding,” A&M receiver Uzoma Nwachukwu tweeted. “Way way wayyyy beyond livid. Furious. Funny how all these decisions are made without thinking of the players. Funny how things work.”
He went on to tweet: “How f______ dumb is this.”
He wasn’t alone, offensive lineman Cedric Ogbeuhi also got in on the action.
“Everybody in the front office are so fake I swear,” COgbeuhi tweeted. “…come to us smiling all the time n s___ then do this…”
Even a former player, Von Miller, tweeted: “It’s unfortunate to see Coach Sherm go He is like another father to me He helped me become the person I am today I will never forget, never”
