Turner Gill is officially out as the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks. Gill, who signed a five-year, $10 million contract in December 2009, will walk with roughly $6 million in his pocket after posting a 5-19 record.
Perhaps all of the Midwest schools with a struggling football teams had a meeting – because they are all firing coaches.
Using the same lingo.
“After a thorough evaluation of our football program, I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to place us on the path toward competing for championships in the Big 12 Conference,” KU Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger told Kansas City ABC affiliate KMBC. “I come to this conclusion reluctantly because I have the utmost respect for Turner Gill as a quality individual who wants only the best for the young men he coaches.”
Sound familiar?
It’s basically the same thing Memphis and Illinois said when they let go their coaches earlier Sunday as well.
As for Gill, he only won one Big 12 match-up in his two years and took what Mark Mangino built.
Zenger also said the University would begin searching for Gill’s replacement and Reggie Michell, the recruiting coordinator, would be the interim head coach.
