Tebowmania… needs to stop

Special Contributor // Adam Piepgrass

I just don’t understand what people are thinking sometimes. Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, right now, is not a starting NFL quarterback. But for some strange reason, there are masses of people – throughout the world – that want him to be there starting quarterback.

In my best Seinfeld voice do I say the following:

“What is the deal with Tebowmania? Every analyst hates him, but all the fans want to see him play. When I first heard the Tebowmania talk, I thought Tebow was cheerleader turned quarterback who still wears the old outfit. Let me tell you this…She probably can’t play…but I’ll start her every week.”

It’s not like the guy hasn’t had the chance to take the job. During the Bronco’s preseason, he was in the competition for the starting job. He got his playing time. Everyone could see if Tim Tebow was ready to be a starting NFL quarterback.

He was not. Even Brady Quinn got in before Tebow did during one preseason game. Brady Quinn! After the preseason finale, it seemed Tebowmania finally got a dose of reality and was ready to move on. The end to the crazy talk.

Fin.

Then, on Monday Night Football no less, the Broncos suffer the first loss of the season.

Oh, and Orton doesn’t play extremely well.

And I started worrying. Would this start up Tebowmania again? I mean the NFL and its fans just went through this less than a month ago. It wouldn’t start again, would it? Really? You think people would start talking again?

Yes, they would. Tebowmania was back! Much like Hulkamania is back in some obscure wrestling league… only this is much worse than a 50-year-old man walking around in neon colored tights. At least the Hulk got scripted to win a few matches and give validity to its comeback.

But I digress, Tebow won’t even get a chance to play. Why? Because John Fox knows that Orton is the Bronco’s best chance to win the game.

How do I know John Fox feels this way? Here is an article on ESPN amongst other sources:

Third paragraph from the bottom quotes Fox:

“Right now we feel like Kyle Orton gives us our best chance,” Fox said. “Even the staff before us felt that way. … Right now, he’s our starting quarterback. There’s no question about that. Like our whole team, we’ve got some room for improvement this week.”

BAM!!!!!

“Even the staff before us felt that way”

BAM!!!

Tebow fans, do you not realize that the administration that drafted Tebow even had Orton ahead of Tebow. The only reason Tebow played last year was because they were 3-10 and why not put a prospect in the game. Can’t hurt. The bleeding wasn’t going to stop regardless of what this young quarterback could do or not do.

The amazing thing is that the article above is also an example of the growing gulf between what the fan’s think and what the Bronco organization knows about Tebow. Let me summarize the article…

FANS ARE PUTTING UP A BILLBOARD TO ADVERTISE THEIR 3rd STRING QB TO THEIR OWN TEAM!!!

Let me say that again…

FANS ARE PUTTING UP A BILLBOARD TO ADVERTISE THEIR 3rd STRING QB TO THEIR OWN TEAM!!!

That’s right, Jesse Oak and friends, spent 10-Grand on that billboard. Jesse and his friends were originally saving that money to go to the Super Bowl this year in Indianapolis. But after the FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON, realized their team was doomed with Orton at the helm and decided the billboard was a better way to spend their money.

A billboard over the Super Bowl?

Okay, the last handful of Super Bowls have been epic. Have they not been paying attention? These people are willing to trade the experience called a “Super Bowl” for a billboard of a third string quarterback!?!

All Jesse Oak is showing us is how cult-ish this Tebowmania has become.

So all the analyst say Tebow can’t throw. He can’t read defenses. He hasn’t picked up the NFL quarterback know-how. So why do fans keep lulling themselves back into Tebowmania? I can only think that they keep remembering those three games he started last year. Something from those games had fans mesmerized.

Yes, Tebow played well. You have to hand it to a guy who has a windmill for a throwing motion.

But, he was 1-2 in those games. Against teams under .500. And – in every game Tebow started – the Broncos were trailing in the fourth quarter. By two scores.

I understand that NFL players have pride, but follow me on this one: If you’re a defensive player… 1-2 weeks away from the end of the season… no hope of playing in the playoffs…. with a two score lead going into the 4th quarter… and you’re playing a quarterback whose throwing motion resembles a softball pitcher… are you going to take it easy?

Who wouldn’t?

Fact is, Tebow can’t be judged by three most meaningless games of the season, versus the bottom half talent in the league. It won’t translate into the same performance versus meaningful games against top half talent in the league.

Let me be candid with all you who are apart of Tebowmania:

Tebowmania… just remember “She can’t play”

Let her go. The losses will just pile up more if you start her. Come now, and the rest of humanity will forgive you for your mistakes. Please, the rest of us citizens plead with you to stop this craziness and come to your senses before you drive us all insane.

Tebowmania… just remember:

“She can’t play.”
