I love a good storm just as much as the next guy – probably more. In fact, I’ve tailed tornadoes and braved a few blizzards in my day, but even I’m not this crazy.
In Virginia, a college decided to start it’s football season. In a hurricane.
Unbelievable.
The two teams, Virginia Union and St. Augustine’s kicked off their season at 2 p.m. or roughly six hours after Hurricane Irene made landfall about 180 miles south.
The final score, if you’re curious, was 12-0
The only scores on the afternoon was a fumble recovered by Virginia Union in the endzone after a muffed punt. The ball blew sideways as the St. Augustine’s punter dropped the ball to boot it. The other score was a 5-yard run by Jerell Washington, who ran for 150 yards on 38 carries.
The most telling stat of the game was a unofficial one. Two of the punts in the game were tallied as minus-1 and minus-9 yards.
