Let the Cam Newton era begin – sort of. The open battle for the quarterback position in Carolina swings the other direction as Newton will get the start for Friday night’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera told reporters the news Wednesday and said it’s “pretty much following the line of what we had planned throughout training camp and that’s to go back and forth.”
The first-team will play the first half and the quarterbacks will split time. No decision has been made yet on who will be the starter at the start of the season but an announcement could come as early as next week.
The Panthers open the regular season against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 11.
