Washington Capitals Development Camp

I’m preparing to go where no sports writer for The [Five] Daily has gone before. Hockey coverage. As apart of my work for WTOP in Washington D.C. I’ll be covering the week-long Capitals Development camp.

Should be interesting. I plan to learn a lot.

This is the fifth-consecutive year the camp is being held at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex and will host all of the capitals prospects including some draft picks and free agents.

And the camps are no joke. Last year, two players who skated on the Iceplex ended up playing for the ‘Caps last season. Marcus Johnson, played in 69 games and nine playoff games and Braden Holtby, played 14 games.

The camp is littered with new blood and some familiar faces. Stanislav Galiev is looking to make a name for himself this week. Galiev was a member of the Memorial Cup-winning St. John Sea Dogs and played a key role in the team‟s QMJHL championship. Patrick Wey is making his second appearance at the camp. Wey played for team USA at the 2011 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, New York where he appeared in six games and earned a bronze medal. The 20-year-old defenseman returned to Boston College for his sophomore season where he recorded one goal, the first of his collegiate career, seven assists and 45 penalty minutes in 37 games.
