The university of Illinois is scrambling after the long holiday weekend. An Illinois football player was arrested for – what police are saying – a possible hate crime.
The player involved, Chris Jones, already has a previous felony conviction for cocaine possession on his record, according to The Associated Press.
Champaign police say the 20-year-old defensive lineman was arrested on Sunday. He was taken into custody on a preliminary aggravated battery charge after two men reported he punched them outside a bar. The men said Jones was in a car whose occupants shouted anti-homosexual insults at them, according to multiple reports including one provided by the police.
University spokesman Kent Brown said Jones has been suspended. Jones hasn’t entered plea.
Brown said coach Ron Zook is aware of the situation.
