It’s not looking great, but it is looking good. That’s the message offered by Billie Jean King regarding USA tennis, Friday night, in Washington, D.C..
King addressed the media before the Washington Kastles – St. Louis Aces World Team Tennis match-up. King is the co-founder of World Team Tennis. She sat with former No. 1 tennis player, Chris Evert.
“What we want to do with World Team Tennis is grow the sport,” Kinda said. “Anytime you can give that gift to anyone, it’s a gift of a lifetime.”
World Team Tennis has been around since the 1970s, but has recently been gaining popularity. Because of that, King and Evert say it’s helping tennis.
“I don’t think in the next year or two we are going to have any top 10 players,” Evert said. “But I see a lot of potential with a lot of 15 and 16-year-old players.”
King explained that a change in tennis from the bottom up needs to occur. Saying that children need to learn to play not from “lessons” but “practice”. Allow kids to join tennis teams, like the ones offered at World Team Tennis.
Evert echoed the sentiment and went one step further, saying World Team Tennis can attract the casual fan.
“I think it brings other fans also,” Evert said. “Not just tennis fans. And it opens peoples eyes.”
