Terrell Owens had surgery during off-season

ESPN.com’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens had surgery this off-season to repair an ACL tear.

There are varied reports on how the injury happened. Some reports cite that the injury happened on the set of his VH1 reality show, others say the injury came during a personal workout.

Owens’ 2010 campaign was cut short when he tore meniscus cartilage in his left knee this past December. The tear was surgically repaired immediately following the injury which sidelined him for the reminder of the season. The current surgery is not believed to be related to December’s season-ending injury.

Owens now finds himself an NFL free agent at the age of 37. In 15 years in the NFL Owens is second on the all-time list of receiving yards behind only Jerry Rice. He is third all-time in receiving touchdowns.

Owens has intended all along to play in the upcoming 2011 season, but as a free agent under the lockout, he remains without a team.
