UCLA starting pitcher Gerrit Cole was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the number one overall pick in the 2011 MLB entry draft.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior was just 6-8 with a 3.31 ERA this past season.
However the Pirates feel Cole features an electric fastball and he has the best pure stuff of any pitching prospect in the draft.
“We felt he’d have the biggest potential impact for us of anybody on the board,” general manager Neal Huntington said.
