The Washington Nationals have named former Seattle Mariners skipper John McLaren as their new interim manager.
McLaren takes over for Jim Riggleman, who abruptly resigned on Thursday.
Riggleman said the team was not committed to him over the long term. The Nationals had not given him an answer on his option for the 2012 season.
Riggleman’s decision caught the Nationals franchise by surprise. General manager Mike Rizzo said he would announce Friday who will manage the team this weekend during a road series in Chicago against the White Sox. Ultimately Rizzo decided to promote from within.
McLaren has served as the Nationals bench coach for the past two seasons.
