Pirates left-fielder Jose Tabata has been taken off the field on a stretcher after hurting his left leg in the first inning Sunday against the Boston Red Sox.
Tabata fell to the grass beyond first base after attempting to “leg out” an infield single. He remained on the grass – in considerable pain – for several minutes. Team trainers came out with a stretcher and golf cart to take him from the field.
Garrett Jones took over for him at first base.
No word yet on his condition. According to The Boston Herald, the Pirates say Tabata will undergo additional tests Monday. They are expected to call up outfielder Alex Presley to take his place before heading to Toronto this week.
On top of that, Jenifer Langosch, Pirates beat writer, tweeted: “OF Alex Presley has been pulled out of Triple-A Indy lineup.”
The 22-year-old Tabata is batting .262 with three homer and 15 RBIs for the Pirates, who began the day two games above .500 this late in the season for the first time since 1999.
