The lone bright spot for the Beavers in the 11-1 loss at Vanderbilt was in the hands of second baseman Jake Rodriguez – not pitcher Sam Gaviglio.
Rodriguez’ bat was the only charm. He went 3-for-3 and drove in the lone Beaver run.
Gaviglio arm was not. He managed 5.1 innings and gave up six walks and 10 runs.
Vandy’s Mike Yastrzemski homered and drove in four runs and Vanderbilt got the 1-0 lead in the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional series.
Yastrzemski, the grandson of former Boston Red Sox star Carl Yastrzemski, finished 2-for-4 and had a three-run homerun to help the Commodores pull away. Jason Esposito had his own two-run home run and drove in three runs.
The Commodores scored 10 of their runs with two outs.
