Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Vin Mazzaro made history during Monday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians.
But it certainly wasn’t the history he wanted to achieve.
Mazzaro allowed 14 runs in just two-and-a-third innings during the Royals 19-1 loss on Monday night.
After the game Mazzaro was sent down to the minor leagues.
No pitcher has allowed 14 runs in fewer innings than Mazzaro, according to STATS LLC, whose database goes back to 1919.
“It’s tough. It was a tough game,” Mazzaro told reporters after the game. “Some of the plays didn’t go my way. It’s a funny game.
Mazzaro allowed 10 runs in the fourth inning and allowed an additional four runs in the fifth before being pulled.
The 14-runs Mazzaro allowed on Monday night is more than the total runs starting pitchers James Shields, Trevor Cahill, Zach Britton, Josh Johnson, and Josh Beckett have allowed during the entire 2011 season.
Mazzaro’s ERA is now 22.74 on the season.
