UVA wins men’s lacrosse championship

The Virginia Cavaliers are the 2011 College Men’s Lacrosse Champions.

#7 UVA defeated unranked Maryland 9-7 in the national title game on Monday afternoon to become the lowest seeded national champion in college lacrosse history.

It is the fourth national championship for 18-year head coach Dom Starsia.  Colin Briggs led the Cavaliers with five goals in the game.

It has been a roller coaster year for the Cavaliers.  Several key players were dismissed from the team and the program is just 14 months removed from the Yeardley Love murder.

Maryland lost in the national title game for the sixth consecutive time since winning their last NCAA championship back in 1975.
