The Philadelphia Phillies have placed right-handed pitcher Joe Blanton on the 15-day disabled list due to an elbow impingement in his pitching arm.
Blanton had recently returned from a stint on the disabled list due to the same injury. However the right hander struggled in his return against the Atlanta Braves on May 14. Although Blanton allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits over 5 innings, his velocity was significantly down.
Blanton received an MRI which was negative.
He was scheduled to start last Thursday against the Colorado Rockies but was scratched right before the game after experiencing pain in his elbow during warmups.
Blanton is 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA on the season.
To replace Blanton the Phillies have recalled right-handed pitcher Vance Worley from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Worley is 2-0 with a 1.33 ERA on the season. He was demoted to the minor leagues last week to make room for the returning Roy Oswalt. The team justify the move by citing the fact that they want to keep him stretched out as a starter in case he was needed for a spot start in the big leagues down the road.
That road was much shorter than the team initially envisioned.
