Paul Splittorff dies

The Kansas City Royals announced Paul Splittorff, the winningest pitcher in the team’s history, has died.

The 64-year-old Splittorff was battling throat cancer but died early Wednesday from complications with melanoma. He passed away at his home in the Kansas City suburb of Blue Springs.

The six-foot-three southpaw was drafted in the 25th round of the 1968 amateur draft and debuted with the Royals on September 23, 1970. He was the first Royals pitcher to win 20 games and won 166 in his career.

After his retirement, he worked as a broadcaster for the Royals and college basketball.
