Ohio State football in trouble – again

Ohio State is staying “in-house” for their newest NCAA rules investigation, an Ohio newspaper is reporting.

Ohio State’s director of compliance is investigating around 50 interesting car sales to Buckeyes athletes and relatives to make certain the deals were not a violation of NCAA rules.

The Columbus Dispatch (ed note: a fantastic paper) reported on Saturday one particular salesman may have received signed memorabilia, tickets or game passes from Ohio State athletes in return for deals at two different dealerships.

The rules state that athletes are prevented from receiving special deals not available to other students. The rule is one of the most difficult to enforce, especially on larger campuses.

The paper may have been tipped off due to oversight on the part of the dealerships. Both dealerships that may be involved are currently displaying signed Ohio State memorabilia in their showrooms. As Ohio State has already re-learned, student athletes are not permitted to trade autographs for discounts.

Recall, Ohio State is already facing an uphill batle against NCAA sanctions. Five players are serving five-game suspensions for accepting improper benefits from a tattoo parlor and the NCAA is investigating coach Jim Tressel, also suspended for five games, for knowing about those benefits and not telling superiors.
