Right handed pitcher Kevin Millwood has opted out of his minor-league contract with the New York Yankees.
ESPN’s Buster Olney was the first to report.
Millwood signed with the Yankees at the end of Spring Training in hopes of eventually earning a spot in the back end of the team’s major league rotation.
The team had until May 1st to add Millwood to the major league roster before he had the opportunity to opt out of his contract.
He went 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 3 minor league starts.
Millwood is now an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team.
Last season with the Baltimore Orioles Millwood was 4-16 with a 5.10 ERA.
The 14-year veteran went 13-10 with a 3.67 ERA in 2009 with Texas and put up a league-best 2.86 ERA in 2005 with Cleveland, despite going 9-11.
