Former Grambling State football coach Melvin Spears Jr. is about $450,000 richer, for the moment. Jurors in Louisiana found that Grambling State broke its contract with Spears Jr. when it fired him in late 2006.
The school owes him the remainder of his contract, $460,500, plus $130,000 for his attorneys.
It was a short trial. The verdict was handed down Friday – the trial began Monday.
“It’s a great opportunity to be vindicated. I’m elated,’’ Spears, 51, told The Advocate of the verdict by a jury of nine men and three women.
Spears guided Grambling to the Southwestern Athletic Conference and black college national titles in 2005. He was named Alcorn State’s coach earlier this year.
Grambling attorney John Madison Jr. says the university will appeal.
