The San Jose Earthquakes will advance to the U.S. Open Cup play-in final after a 1-0 win against the Portland Timbers.
The game was played in front of 11,412 rabbid Timbers fans at JELD-WEN Field on Tuesday.
With a penalty-kick shootout looming, Ike Opara headed home the lone goal of the match – at the end of the second overtime period. The ‘Quakes victory snapped a three-game slide. It was the Timbers’ first loss at their newly refurbished Jeld-Wen Field this season.
Opara’s header sailed past diving Timbers’ goalie Troy Perkins in the 120th minute.
The Quakes will face the Chicago Fire for a chance to qualify for the 40-team U.S. Open Cup tournament.
