The Cincinnati Reds have placed fireball relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman on the 15-day disabled list after an MRI revealed inflammation in his left pitching shoulder.
The 23-year-old Cuban defector has struggled with his role in the bullpen this season. He has been wild and had developed elbow tenderness after pitching in four games in five days in April.
“It was affecting his mechanics,” manager Dusty Baker told reporters. “You can see the last few outings, he hasn’t been the same. He really hasn’t complained, either.”
Right-handed relief pitcher Jordan Smith was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to take Chapman’s spot on the 25-man roster.
In 16 relief appearances this season Chapman is 2-0 with a 6.92 ERA and 2.00 WHIP. He has allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on 6 hits while walking 20 batters and striking out 15 in 13 innings of work.
