Utah Utes hope Cron outlasts UNLV Rebels’ Tanner

The Utah Utes are set to being a three-game series with UNLV Friday. The team has won five of their last six.

UNLV, conversely, has lost six of their last eight games. The UNLV Rebels (18-9, 1-5 Mountain West) were riding high last week. They knocked off No. 11 UC Irvine last Wednesday. It was the third ranked opponent they have defeated this season.

Following the win, the Rebels dropped three straight to New Mexico. This weekend, UNLV is trying to right the ship.

Utah leads the Mountain West Conference. The Utes (11-9, 4-1 MWC) went 2-1 against BYU two weeks ago and took two games against Air Force (the third game was postponed).

“We are playing well, but we need to finish off this homestand correctly and continue to play well,” Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. “Our guys our playing with great confidence right now, and that’s really nice to see. If we get down or make a mistake, there’s no panic.”

Panic isn’t in a team’s vocabulary when it features hitters like C.J. Cron – hitting .474 with five homeruns.

Rick Anton will take the mound. He’s posted a 2.36 ERA in 42 innings of work. He is 3-1 on the season. UNLV will open the series with Tanner Peters on the bump. Both are among the conference leaders in ERA, strikeouts, innings pitched and wins.

“First thing that you think about with UNLV is Tanner Peters,” Kinneberg said. “This could be a real good match up on Friday night.”
